In the Classroom

Flexible Seating
While students must sit at their desks while I am teaching a lesson, I allow students to choose where they sit during independent work time. I have a plethora of fun tools, including unique chairs, fidgets, calming body wraps, and even a tent, which students can use to work.

I set timers so that students know how long they have to accomplish class tasks. Students finish their work a minute or two before the timer ends, and can play a quiet game or play with Play Dough, once I've checked their work.

I use breathing exercises and movement to bring everyone to focus when we need to regroup.

Stations, Group Work, &
Collaborative Opportunities
To keep students engaged, I utilize different areas of the classroom, and implement a small-group-work at stations.
I utilize myself as a station for small group work. This way I can check in with students for several minutes, while other students are engaged with an independent or group task.

For all my lessons, I follow a structure of allowing students to brainstorm independently, rapidly writing their ideas. Then, students can contribute to the class and inspire others. Then, students break-away into small groups, or an independent task.
This method includes all students' ideas, and allows all students time to utilize their own knowledge, without first being influenced by others.

Projects
I provide students with the tools and opportunity to work independently, and with groups.
Independent project work deepens students' individual knowledge about a subject, as students become aware of topics they must research further, and have the opportunity to identify areas of growth.

Collaboration projects follow a structured format and are an excellent teaching tool, as students often learn best from their peers. Students must collaborate to guide themselves through a project.

Student Lead
I love to incorporate students' ideas into our everyday classroom routine.
For example, a 2nd grade student had the idea to implement a classroom mail system, so I allowed her to "install" (tape) envelope-mailboxes to the sides of all the desks. The students were motivated to write letters, and I was able to teach them to properly do so. Writing letters is a 2nd grade standard, and my students were intrinsically driven to do so.

No Homework - Just Read.
I like students to complete most lessons in class so that they can receive immediate support from their peers and from myself.

I assign a weekly reading log for participation points, to encourage students to keep their minds sharp by reading an engaging book, which is a task most students can do independently.
In my experience, encouraging reading instead of assigning nightly homework improves students' attitude toward school and reading.

I assign monthly or quarterly at home projects. I ensure students have the tools to complete all investigations at home. I have assigned monthly book report project-prompts, as well as at-home-investigation projects.

Collaboration Opportunities
Students engage and problem solve together with innovative projects. My lessons involve individual, partner, and group components.

Whole Group
I construct my day so that students have a variety of opportunities to engage in different methods of learning. For example, students might simply choose their seat to work independently, in groups, or alone. Other times, students follow a rotation schedule. I engage student's bodies and brains during whole group learning using TPR strategies.
